Description of Conway Cottage
Tucked behind the main street of the picturesque village of Rothbury, this delightful Grade II listed, stone built 19th century cottage was formerly the blacksmith cottage of Conway House. Conway Cottage has been recently refurbished to offer all modern facilities desired for contemporary living, yet has carefully retained many of its original features ensuring the property oozes character. An open fire in the lounge guarantees guests receive a warm welcome whatever the season and the cottage is snuggled in an attractive walled courtyard; idyllic for a spot of alfresco dining! Rothbury is found nestled at the foot of the heater clad Simonside and Lordenshaw Hills and straddles the banks of the trout and salmon rich River Coquet, where a licence and permit for fishing can be obtained locally. This is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists where the surrounding beautiful countryside can be absorbed. The village is known locally as the Gateway to the Northumberland National Park where there are several quaint tea rooms, pubs, charming shops and a riverside 18 hole golf course all within a gentle stroll. The 1,000 acres estate of Cragside, once home to Lord Armstrong, and the first home in the world to be lit by hydro electricity is an interesting National Trust visitor attraction less than a mile away. The bustling market town of Alnwick, boasts its own dramatic castle, often referred to as The Windsor of the North and ancestral home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film location for Harry Potters Hogwarts Academy!) along with the spectacular Alnwick Garden, with its Grand Cascade Waterfall and restaurant incorporated within the largest tree house in Europe, 15 miles east. The Heritage coastline this area is proud to have acknowledged as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is less than 20 miles away making Conway Cottage an excellent base for exploring north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders
