Description of Red Deer Lodge
The peaceful village of Finsthwaite nestles amongst large ares of woodland one mile from Lakeside at the southern end of the Lake Windermere and close to Hawkshead and Grizedale Forest. The area offers some excellent walking opportunities, much favoured by Wainwright, including the circular 5 mile walk to High and Low Dam, from where the waters drove the nearby Stott Park Bobbin Mill. High Dam Tarn is a well known beauty spot and where stands Finsthwaite Tower, built to commemorate those servicemen who defeated the French in the 18th century. St Peters Church is well worth a visit, the churchyard home to the grave of the Finsthwaite Princess, believed to be the daughter of Prince Charles Edward, the Young Pretender.
